“Daddy!”

Chad could barely hold onto Jocelyn when she lunged for her father. Then the fucking sorcerer lit the room up like a bonfire and disappeared. Chad let her go, knowing it was far too late to save the man, but also knowing she needed this moment. The pixies didn’t have to tell him the fire would be almost impossible to put out—he’d seen damage like this before. It burned just like the fire that had claimed Jocelyn’s apartment last year. They needed to control, contain, and get the hell out.

He spun to Max. “Make sure things are secure outside. Logan, shut her mom up and get her in the truck.”

Max grabbed him by the shoulder and jerked his chin toward Jocelyn. “Are you sure you can handle this on your own?”

“I’m sure we have more things to do than we have people. I’ll get her out of here before it all goes up.”

Clenching his jaw tight, Max nodded and set to work, ever the soldier.

Chad turned back to Jocelyn, who was trying to drag her father toward the door. He strode over and picked the man up. For some reason, it struck him as odd that the man should feel so light. Jocelyn had always talked about her dad as if he was larger than life. This Carlos Reyes wasn’t big enough to be her father. Near the hall, Chad laid him back down.

“What are you doing? Get him out of here!” Jocelyn shoved at him, panic showing in the whites of her eyes and the fluttering of her hands.

Chad gripped her fingers in his, holding them tight until she met his gaze. “No one here can stop this. Take the opportunity your mother won’t get. Say goodbye to him.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks and her chin trembled.

Reaching up, Chad wiped the first of them away, but the next set met his fingers before they’d moved on. “You don’t have a lot of time, Joce. Spend it on him, not tears.”

The deluge didn’t stop, in fact it worsened, but she fell to her knees. “Daddy. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”

How the man was still alive, Chad didn’t know, but he managed to grip Joce’s fingers and squeeze. He mouthed words he no longer had sound to make. I love you.

“I love you, too. You have to fight this, Dad. I need you. Mom needs you. You’re tougher than this. I know you are.

You are strong enough. Take care of her.

“No,” she cried, crushing his hand hard enough that something inside had to be breaking. “She won’t let me. She needs you. You’re good for her; you keep her sane.”

A pained smile crossed his face, even as he winced and formed the words, Your turn to be good.

With his lips still curled upward, Carlos shuddered out one more breath and lay still.

“Daddy? Daddy!” Jocelyn pounded at his chest, and it caved beneath her fists, smoke pouring from the wound.

Tears flowed with no stopping as Chad bound Jocelyn in his arms and dragged her away from her father’s corpse.
